As in gamma-ut, bass G, the first note in the lowest of the medieval hexachord scales— from the sapphic stanza of a hymn for John the Baptist's day: “ Ut queant laxis re sonare fibris Mi ra gestorum fa muli tuorum, Sol ve polluti la bili reatum, Sancte Iohannes”—
then applied to a thing's whole scope, plenitude, sung.
