ANIMATING PARK EPHEMERA

I’m honored to be able to read—with special guests—from my recreation of a choreographic score made of garbage and originally designed for performance on Fresh Kills Landfill on Sunday September 18 at the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art on Staten Island, alongside the wonderful poet/scholar/activist Celina Su.

The event is part of an exhibition devoted to both the choreographic work of Kathy Westwater and to a collaborative series of research-based, interdisciplinary performances titled PARK of which Westwater is director—and in which I’ve been involved headlong as principal collaborator, for over a decade.

It will begin at 2 pm with readings from the exhibition catalogue by Allie Tepper and Newhouse Center curator Melissa West, as well as introductory remarks by Kathy Westwater. At 3 pm, Celina and I will read from my 25-foot-wide sestet made of garbage salvaged over the course of six years; I will be joined by a semi-scored chorus of comrades including Robert Kocik, Gabriella Iacono, Marisa Clementi, Elayne Bàez, and Sharon Li.

Please join us at the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art on Staten Island this weekend!

Celebrate the release of the exhibition catalogue for PARK Ephemera with a reading of excerpts by poet Jennifer Scappettone from her iconic The Republic of Exit 43: Outtakes & Scores from an Archaeology and Pop-Up Opera of the Corporate Dump. Poet Celina Su will read excerpts of her own work.
