梅雨に入り暑さも増してきましたが、みなさま方におかれましては、健やかにお過ごしのことと拝察いたします。さて、事務局から７月例会のご案内を差し上げます。今回は、米国はシカゴ大学から新進気鋭のモダニズムの研究者がゲスト出演され、また協会の研究を牽引してきたヴェテラン大田信良先生がお話をされます。例会終了後の懇親会にもぜひいらしてください。

Jennifer Scappettone (Associate Professor of English, Creative Writing, and

Romance Languages and Literatures at the University of Chicago)

“Between Pentecost and Babel: Wireless Imaginations in Postwar Literary

Arts and the Dream (or Nightmare) of a Transnational Language”

Jennifer Scappettone will give a lecture surrounding the revision of modernist dreams of a supranational language detectable in the visual poetry of the postwar period. She will explore the links between poets' experiments with graphically explosive form and their aspirations to deflect the ideological inscription of segregated national languages in the aftermath of World War II—by creating verbal tableaus lacking a single “fatherland” or “mother tongue,” which expose the mongrel sources and futures of contemporary idioms. Given that we are meeting in Tokyo, the talk will also present the beginnings of Professor Scappettone’s current research on the reoccupation of Ezra Pound and Ernest Fenollosa's The Chinese Character as a Medium for Poetry in visual poetry from Seiichi Niikuni to Xu Bing.
